OpenEPI feasibility study and Proof of Concept now published
We are proud to announce the publication of the OpenEPI Feasibility Study Report, covering our extensive work in the OpenEPI project through 2023 and 2024. The OpenEPI study, funded by Norad, explores the potential of the Open Earth Platform Initiative (OpenEPI) to improve access to climate, nature, and environmental data — particularly targeting climate change mitigation in sub-Saharan Africa.
OpenEPI is designed to empower local developers and innovators by providing open, high-quality data and services that support climate resilience and sustainable development. The feasibility study outlines the technical, operational, and strategic foundations for a scalable, developer-first platform built on open source principles and FAIR data standards.
Key highlights in the study and PoC – described in the report – include:
- A blueprint for a fully open-source, multi-cloud platform architecture
- A curated set of APIs and data services tailored to climate adaptation use cases
- Insights from user engagement, including a workshop in Kigali, Rwanda
- A roadmap for organizational development, governance, and sustainable funding
- Risk assessments and risk mitigation strategies for long-term success
We invite you to explore the full report here.
The OpenEPI platform will remain active throughout 2025, continuing to support innovation and local development. This summer, the OpenEPI team at Knowit will host a hackathon — both to demonstrate and validate the potential of an open platform like this, and to engage with the broader developer community.
